City Paints Crosswalk, Adds Signage on Edwards Road
January 9, 2025
City staff installed a painted crosswalk and street signage on Edwards Road near the DCTA Rail Trail (Katy Trail) during the week of December 16, 2024.
A new painted crosswalk and signage installed the week of December 16, 2024.
The new pedestrian crossing, part of the Mayhill Phase 2 project, was initially built without basic pedestrian safety infrastructure, leaving pedestrian and bicycle traffic to fend for themselves as they crossed four lanes of turning motor vehicle traffic that includes large semi-trucks.
New pedestrian crossing was built without basic infrastructure to help people safely cross four lanes of motor vehicle traffic.
The City of Denton does not currently share detailed road design plans with the public, so it’s unclear whether engineers also designed the road without these basic pedestrian accommodations. Lack of public access to detailed design plans means that incomplete or unsafe designs for pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure can go unnoticed until it’s too late or too expensive to correct them.
Shortly after Bike Denton’s November 19 blog post highlighting the safety concern, staff from the city’s Transportation Division made plans to install a marked crosswalk and signage to warn motorists about the crossing and remind them to stop and yield for people in the crosswalk, in accordance with state law.
City’s planned signage and road markings.
City staff initially stated the road markings and signage would be installed by the end of January 2025. It was installed much sooner during the week of December 16, 2024.
Staff emphasized that the new design is not necessarily final and can be adjusted depending on how it performs. User feedback for the design of this intersection may be emailed to Dr. Farhan Butt and Chandra Muruganandham. In addition to contacting city staff, also consider sharing your experiences with Bike Denton.
Use Engage Denton to report more general concerns like broken pedestrian buttons, faded road markings, broken/missing road signs, traffic signal timing, vehicles blocking sidewalks or bike lanes, and more.
