Denton Transportation Staff to Address Safety Concerns on Edwards Road

December 15, 2024

City of Denton Transportation staff shared plans last week to address safety concerns at a new pedestrian crossing that was constructed without basic safety infrastructure as part of the Mayhill Phase 2 project.

New pedestrian crossing was built basic infrastructure to help pedestrians safely cross four lanes of car traffic.

Denton City Council member Brian Beck requested staff look into the issue during the November 20 Mobility Committee meeting in response to Bike Denton’s November 19 blog post highlighting the safety concern.

The City will add a marked crosswalk and signage to alert drivers of the crossing and remind them to yield to people in the crosswalk, according to Dr. Farhan Butt, Deputy Director of the Transportation Services Division.

Planned signage and road markings.

Staff anticipate the new road markings and signage will be installed by the end of January, weather-permitting.

According to Dr. Butt and Chandra Muruganandham, Senior Traffic Engineer, this is an initial round of treatments. After implementation, staff plan to monitor the intersection to assess whether additional intervention is needed.

Following installation of the new striping and signage, transportation staff welcome feedback from individuals navigating through the area. Close calls, continued safety concerns, or comments about what is or is not working with the design are helpful information for transportation staff while considering any future design adjustments.

User feedback for the design of this intersection may be emailed to Dr. Farhan Butt and Chandra Muruganandham. In addition to contacting city staff, also consider sharing your experiences with Bike Denton.
