Denton Releases Draft Sidewalk Work Plan
Denton recently released its draft work plan to fill gaps in Denton’s sidewalk network. The work plan divides proposed projects by year through 2024, prioritized based on a list of criteria.
In 2019, Denton voters approved a $12 million bond to construct sidewalks over a six year period at $2 million per year. According to a staff presentation to the 2019 Bond Committee, Denton needs more than $276 million to construct its nearly 450 miles of missing sidewalk. If we continue at our current pace of $2 million spent on sidewalks each year, it will take more than 138 years to fill in the rest of Denton’s sidewalk gaps.
In the same 2019 bond, Denton voters approved more than $131 million in road projects. Denton could afford to put more money towards filling in sidewalk gaps if it were a priority. However, transportation funding indicates the top priority is infrastructure for people traveling by automobile.
The Denton City Council will discuss the draft Sidewalk Work Plan during their January 4th meeting.
