Bicycle Friendly Community Update
On August 17th, Council Member Brian Beck (District 2) proposed the consideration of an action plan for Denton to pursue a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) designation. A majority of the Denton City Council supported discussing the action plan further in a future work session, but the BFC topic was never scheduled or added to the list of future work sessions.

On October 16th, Bike Denton reached out to members of the City Council Agenda Committee to ask why the BFC Action Plan work session had not been scheduled or added to the list of future work sessions.
City staff provided an update in an October 22 Friday Staff Memo.
Capital Projects/Engineering staff are currently outlining projects and strategies in an Informal Staff Report (ISR) that will be included in a Friday Report to City Council by the end of the calendar year. The ISR will outline the City’s strategic approach over the next 18 - 24 months in preparation for the next BFC application. The League of American Bicyclists, who administer the BFC program, also announced on August 9, 2021, that the application will be closed through the fall and winter to undergo revisions, and a new version of the application will be released in Spring 2022. Staff will schedule a work session once the new application is released next year to facilitate a conversation with Council regarding the City’s planned proactive approach to prepare for the next BFC application. Staff also met with Bike Denton on October 21, 2021, to share this information and discuss next steps.
Stay tuned. When the next Informational Staff Report is released this year, we’ll post another update.
