Bicycle, Pedestrian Access to Greenbelt Planned along US 380

It may be possible to access the US 380 entrance of the Greenbelt without an automobile by the end of 2023.

Following years of planning, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure is being built along US 380 between Mayhill Road and the Greenbelt entrance. When complete, there will be a 5-foot sidewalk on the south side of US 380 and a 10-foot multi-use path on the north side. Construction of the 5-foot sidewalk is already in progress.

The 10-foot sidepath is part of Phase 2 of projects along US 380 between Mayhill and the Greenbelt. There are three phases total, with Phase 3 including the installation of a center median in the roadway. All three phases are expected for completion by the end of December, 2023.

The 10-foot sidepath will provide bicycle connection from Mayhill to the Greenbelt. Mayhill, which was recently widened, has a 10-foot sidepath from US 380 to Leafy Road. There is still a 0.2 mile gap between the Mayhill multi-use path and the DCTA rail trail. Plans to fill the gap are in progress as part of another phase of the Mayhill project.

Two projects remain to connect the DCTA rail trail to the Greenbelt: a gap on Mayhill and a multi-use path along US 380.

The Mayhill multi-use path does not yet have safe bicycle or pedestrian connections to anything else. Connecting it to the DCTA rail trail will provide safer bicycle and pedestrian options. Additional connections from Mingo Road to the planned multi-use path along US 380 will be needed to avoid excessive detours for a majority of Denton residents traveling to the Greenbelt by bicycle.
