Recap: 2021 Great American Cleanup by Bicycle
On Saturday, sixteen people participated by bicycle in the Great American Cleanup, organized by Keep Denton Beautiful. Denton has participated in this nation-wide event for more than thirty years.
In normal years, more than 1,000 volunteers clean multiple tons of litter from across Denton. The past two years have had lower participation due to the pandemic, but hundreds of people, including Bike Denton, have continued to participate.
Bike Denton put its own twist on this event by cleaning and towing the litter by bicycle instead of by motor vehicle. This was the sixth time that Bike Denton has participated in this event, removing over thirteen bags of litter from a portion of the DCTA Rail Trail and from Quakertown Park.
Here are the highlights.
Quakertown Park
The Taylor family participated in the cleanup event as an extension of Bike Denton. They used their cargo bike from Denton-based Bunch Bikes to clean litter around Quakertown Park.
DCTA Rail Trail
Another group remove litter from the DCTA Rail Trail between Shady Oaks and Loop 288. This is Bike Denton’s official Adopt-A-Spot.
Odd Items
There are always some strange or funny items to be found. These were our highlights.
Wrapping It Up
Bike Denton is responsible for cleaning its Adopt-A-Spot four times per year. If you’re interesting in participating with us for a future cleanup event, keep an eye out!
