Bike Month Proclamation

A huge thanks to Denton residents who showed their support for a bike-friendly Denton by attending Denton’s Bike Month proclamation! Each person told us one thing they like about biking, including feeling supported, connecting with other people and avoiding the frustration of hunting for parking!

Bike to School Day

The Bike Bus and Newton Rayzor Elementary (NRE) celebrated Bike to School Day by inviting NRE Principal Panter, Denton ISD Superintendent Jamie Wilson and Denton Councilmember Brian Beck to roll with them to school. The NRE Bike Bus is now a year old, riding together to school each Wednesday.

According to Bike Bus founder, Stephanie Brooks, some students have learned to ride a bicycle just so they can participate. Parents have purchased e-bikes to ride with their kids, and some have requested to transfer their children to NRE so they can participate in the Bike Bus.

A bike bus can be started by any school employee or parent. The key is to have a set route each week, seek parent volunteers to help out and communicate the plan to parents and students each week.

Bike to Work Day

Bike to Work Day takes place every May on the third Friday. There are a variety of ways to celebrate Bike to Work Day, including biking to work, organizing a pit stop for people biking to work or coordinating an activity with coworkers to celebrate.

Employees at Texas Woman’s University celebrate by biking to Downtown Denton to enjoy lunch together on Bike to Work Day.

Positive Cycology Ride

May is both Bike Month and Mental Health Awareness Month. Physical activity, including riding a bicycle, can be highly beneficial for good mental health. Making biking a social activity is even better.

For the second year in a row, The Art Room Denton partnered with Denton County Cycling to organize a fundraiser event called the Positive Cycology Ride. Riders rode either 50 miles, 27 miles or the eight-mile family ride.

Riders of the 27-mile route wait behind the pace car on the outset of the ride.

National Bike Month is every May, but cycling happens all year. Where are you riding?
