Update: Trail Funding, Mingo Road and Loop 288 Sidewalks
July 17, 2023
Denton is continuing progress toward funding bicycle and pedestrian facilities on Mingo Road, adding more sidewalk to Loop 288 and funding more city trails that can double as transportation infrastructure for people walking or using a small mobility device like a bicycle, wheelchair or scooter.
Funding for Mingo Road and Trails Recommended by Citizen Bond Committee
Denton’s Special Citizen Bond Advisory Committee wrapped up on July 11. Among other projects, the committee recommended $15 million for trails and $35 million for Mingo Road to install additional quiet zones at railroad crossings, add a third car lane, drainage infrastructure and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.
The Denton City Council will receive a presentation on the committee’s recommendations on Tuesday, July 18 at 2 p.m. The city council will then discuss whether to make any adjustments to the committee’s recommendations and whether to send a bond election to City of Denton voters in November.

Loop 288 Sidewalk Update
In response to a request from Council member Brandon Chase McGee, staff provided updates on Loop 288 sidewalks near Audra Lane in the Friday Staff Report on July 14, 2023.
Staff hope to begin installing missing sidewalks later this year on the west side of Loop 288 between Audra and an existing sidewalk south of Our Daily Bread. According to staff, these sidewalk segments will be constructed using TRiP funding from the Denton County Transit Authority (DCTA). DCTA’s TRiP program returns a portion of its funding back to the three cities that fund DCTA. Denton’s 2022 allocation was $3 million.
Staff plan to use previously approved bond funding for sidewalks to construct a missing sidewalk segment north of Audra Lane. However, this segment will require coordination with TxDOT. Staff did not provide an estimated timeline for when this segment might be built.
